McClafferty Printing is a mid-sized commercial printing company that is owned and operated by the same family that formed it over 50 years ago. Founded by my Grandfather, William J. McClafferty, Jr., and my Father, William J. McClafferty III, in 1948, McClafferty Printing was originally located in downtown Wilmington, Delaware at 501 Orange Street in the center of town.
I began to oversee operations in the late seventies, and directed the business toward a four-color environment. We relocated to 1600 North Scott Street - the heart of scenic Trolley Square, and purchased our first four-color press. We quickly became the color shop of choice in the area.
The early nineties brought an era of change as we pushed into the digital arena well ahead of our local competitors. We formed Gamut Color, an affiliate of McClafferty Printing, to handle our prepress needs and provide digital imaging services to area designers and advertising agencies.
As technology advanced, so did McClafferty Printing. In the mid-nineties we purchased another large press, the Heidelberg Speedmaster six-color with aqueous coating tower. With two large color presses running three shifts, our business kept growing, and in the late nineties we purchased our third large press - the Heidelberg 72Si 7-color.
The year 2003 brought the Heidelberg SM52 five color perfector press with aqueous coating. This press was our answer to the small sheet size and digital style runs, with the high quality of lithography.
The year 2007 was the year of major expansion. The McClafferty Printing, Newport Plant opened for business in March 2007. The plant houses a new 40" Heidelberg SM102 six color perfector press with aqueous coating. This press gave McClafferty the ability to print on all sheetfed sizes. The Newport plant also houses various finishing machines and office space for sales, press checks and customer conferences.
We have now enjoyed 6 decades of success, high quality printing and value added service to a much expanded audience. We look forward to finding new ways to help the print buying community with all their needs.
We’ve been blessed in the past two decades and have some wonderful plans for the future. Our building's new addition should prove to be immensely helpful for our growing bindery and sales force. We’ve broadened the scope of our clientele to include business and print buyers throughout the United States. And as we step into the world of e-commerce, we look forward to seeing more new business relationships develop and expand.
